Daily Devotion: December 17, 2019

Psalm 133:1-3   "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! (2)  It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; (3)  As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore."

This is still a song of degree, or a traveling Psalm, that was sung as the people approached Jerusalem to worship. They are almost there at this point. Their hearts and minds are focused upon the Lord and only on Him. They are worshiping long before they arrive. I can picture them coming from all directions and converging at a place where they are now making the turn to go into the city. Their voices are now combining and the joyful noise can be heard throughout the hills round about the city. They are at one as they approach the House of God.

What a beautiful thought to have as we approach God's House each week! Would it not be wonderful if we could experience the same thing as we enter to worship? We live in a day when our minds are occupied on so many differing matters that it would almost seem impossible for us to have this mindset on Sunday morning. Or is it really impossible? I do not think it to be an impossibility, but it does require a mind set on God and His loving grace through Jesus Christ. It requires each one exercising the art of laying everything else down and only focusing upon that which is the center of our being: The Lord God Almighty.

How good and how pleasant it is when the people of God come together with only one focus. It is like the ointment upon the head of the high priest. It is to come in the mindset of Jesus Christ and the great sacrificial offering He made on our behalf when He gave Himself to die for the debt of sin against us. It is like the dew of Hermon which came in an abundance to water and maintain the life of the area. The dew of God's Word does not beat over the head; rather, it falls gently upon the heart of God's people. The dew supplies that which is needed for the fruit of the Spirit to be plentiful in our lives.

How good and how pleasant it is when the people of God come together with only one focus.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
