Daily Devotion: December 18, 2019

Psalm 134:1    "Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD."

Why is it so important to have a daily approach to God? Why is worship such an integral part of living? Why do I have to go to church? Can I not handle things on my own and in my own way?

It seems there could easily be an attitude develop that would lend toward self-sufficiency. In this type attitude, God becomes a figurehead that is nice to read about and hear about. There tends to be more of a mental approach rather than a heart felt approach unto Him. The Word of God is more of a good moral lesson rather than the absolute heart of God speaking to my heart. The problem with this type thinking is that somewhere along the way, we hit a brick wall and cannot handle nor deal with the situation. What do we do then? We have programmed ourselves to be able to handle anything and everything that life throws our way. We go into a tailspin that is not a good place to be.

The truth of the matter is that we cannot deal with life nor its situations on our own. We are not capable of handling circumstances that are thrown our way. So, the answers to the questions above are found in the deep need that everyone of us have for a relationship with the Almighty God Who has absolute power, wisdom, grace, and mercy. He not only is filled with love, He is love. Therefore, everything He does for us is out of that nature. Yes, even those things we do not understand is filtered through God's love and grace before we are ever confronted with it.

It is important for us to develop an attitude of worship and dependence upon the Lord. When that is developed in us, we will be found "standing" even in the most difficult times. As a pastor, I see it constantly. Those who have developed their hearts through worship are able to see beyond the storms. They are able to stand even in the "night seasons" of life because their trust has been strengthened by way of exercising faith. I submit to you there is no better way to exercise our faith than through the regular habit of public worship and praise unto the Lord God.

"Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD."

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
