Daily Devotion: November 15, 2019

Psalm 119:130 "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple."
Psalm 119:135 "Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes."

As a reminder, each section of this particular Psalm starts with a letter of the Hebrew Alphabet. So, we can say we are reviewing the ABC's of the Word of God. How many times have you found yourself singing the Alphabet Song when in the presence of a child? I want to think I'm doing it for their benefit, but in reality I think I am reminding myself that I still know how to say my alphabet.

I realize we have been in this Psalm for quite some time; but, it sure seems to me that God intends for us to spend time in His Word. That is the manner in which He speaks to us. I can assure you that the Holy Spirit of God never gives us directions that are contrary to God's Word. Therefore, we need to be familiar with His Word in order to be able to distinguish the voice that speaks to us. Be assured, Satan and his demons speak to us as well. We are told in the book of 1 John that there are many spirits in the world. They have voices. They use those voices to try to confuse us.

But the Word of God gives light and understanding to us. There is a simplicity that is in Christ Jesus. We tend to allow complications to cause us to stray. The entrance of God's Word gives light and understanding. As we read, we are to think upon the things He speaks to us. As we read, meditate, and the Holy Spirit begins to give us understanding, we can sense the very face of God shining upon us and His smile warming our hearts.

I thank each one for allowing me this time in your life each day. I always say that I do this for a selfish reason. It motivates me to begin my day in the Word of God. Thank you for allowing me to share it with you. God bless you!

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
