Daily Devotion: Mark 9:50

Mark 9:50   "Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."

This verse is the culmination of a message given by Christ after a statement had been made to Him concerning the attitude toward others. "And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us." (Mark 9:38) John did not think the other person should be allowed to cast out devils because he did not walk with them. Jesus answered with great wisdom, "He that is not against us is on our part."

Whether we think it to be right or wrong, there are many varieties of names under which Christians identify themselves. Whether we agree with the doctrine of others or not, we must be very careful in the manner we treat them. If they belong to the Lord, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ. I don't want this devotional to be about denominational differences; rather this is about our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I pray all my devotions are focused on Him.

There is the possibility that we can become so headstrong that we lose our saltness. I'm not speaking of compromising doctrine, but the manner in which we look at others. There was a time in the book of Acts when a counsel was called in Jerusalem. Peter came to speak of the manner in which the Lord had dealt with the household of Cornelius, a Gentile centurion. A very beautiful statement was made at that counsel: "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they." (Acts 15:11) Notice the wording used by Peter, "we shall be saved, even as they." Every child of God has been brought to the family of God purely and simply by the blood of Jesus Christ. It is not because one believed the right thing or was able to figure things out more correctly. It is not that one is better than the other. We all are saved by the grace of God.

You may ask: What is the reason for my rambling? I'm glad you asked. We should never allow our salt to lose its saltiness. Yes, we are to stand firm on those things the Lord has revealed to us. But we also should be open to listen to others. And most of all, we should never cause someone else to be hesitant to share with us those things in which they are founded. May we have salt within ourselves and peace with one another.

Daily Devotion: Psalm 88:1-4

Psalm 88:1-4  A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  (2)  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;  (3)  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.  (4)  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength" I've said this before and I will say it again (and probably more times before we get to the end of the Psalms) - I love the Psalms because I can surely identify with them. Most Psalms start in a low place and as the writer expresses his thoughts, the Lord begins to lift him up out of that dry place.  Though this entire Psalm is a fervent cry unto the Lord, the Psalmist tells us specifically in three verses that he cried daily unto the Lord. Just a few Psalms ago, we were reminded that God always hears our prayers. ...

Daily Devotion: Knowing God By Bearing Fruit

Some will notice the title is not “Bearing fruit because we know God,” so to avoid getting sidetracked with that, we can start with the fact that we won’t bear any godly fruit unless our heart has been changed and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Also, to avoid confusion, I’ll be using the terms “bearing fruit,” “good works” and “service” interchangeably.  I took this article’s title from Part 7, of John Piper’s “Look at the Book” session on Colossians 1:9-12. I greatly encourage you to view that short video to get his excellent exposition on this subject.  When I saw the title of the video earlier this year, I got kind of excited because that’s the direction my thinking has gone in the past several years. My thinking was founded Biblically with verses on good works like Matthew 5:16 – “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father, who is in heaven.” But I couldn’t expand it to expla...
