Daily Devotion: Mark 14:13-16

Mark 14:13-16    "And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.  (14)  And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?  (15)  And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.  (16)  And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover."

"And he sendeth." Jesus was in Jerusalem for His final observance of an earthly Passover. He sent two disciples into the city to make a place ready to observe this feast. Passover was the time to remember the manner in which the Lord brought Israel out of the Egyptian captivity. In just a matter of hours, Jesus would become THE Passover Lamb sent by God to take away our sins by His sacrificial death.

I want to think this morning about the phrase, "And he sendeth." And couple with that the phrase found in verse 16, they "found as he had said unto them." This is not the first time that something had happened "as he had said." This would not be the last time the truth of His statements would be "as he had said."

What significance does this have for us today? When we serve the Lord in the manner in which He sends us, we can be assured that we will find the results "as he had said." We are to be submissive to the will of the Lord and as we do that, He provides our every need.

There seems to me to be a key to experiencing this great fact. In order to hear what He says, we must be in communication with Him. We lift our prayers to Him, but then we are to listen as He speaks to us. Yes, be assured, the Lord does speak to us by His Holy Spirit. He speaks to our hearts, but we must be still and listen and seek the ability to discern between that which the Lord speaks and that which the world yells loudly at us.  For today, let us think heavily upon this fact. Jesus sends and He brings the results. May we be obedient to His call.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
