Daily Devotion: Joshua 10:6-8

Joshua 10:6-8    "And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.  (7)  So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.  (8)  And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee."

Recently, we saw the men of Gibeon coming to the Israelites to deceive them. Their plan was successful and they were now under the umbrella of Israel's protection. The five kings of the Amorites became fearful when they heard about the league made between Israel and Gibeon. Their fear drove them to rise up and form their own league and they decided to roll in against Gibeon and destroy the city. What they did not understand is the protection of the Almighty God is greater than any force the world throws at His people.  When the men of Gibeon heard about the nations coming against them, they sent to Joshua for help. Joshua heard their plea and gathered his mighty men of valour to go protect Gibeon from the attack of the enemy.

Hopefully as we read the first paragraph, our minds are already going to a place where our protection originates. You and I are constantly under attack from the prince of darkness. Especially when we are led to make the determination that we are going to make a league with our Lord. When the Holy Spirit leads us to the place where we are seeking to walk with the Lord and have fellowship with Him, the enemy goes into high gear. He comes rolling against us with the vigor of a young calf frisking in the field. He kicks his legs up, makes all kinds of noise, and encamps at our doorstep. Do not be alarmed. Be ready for these attacks. Put on the whole armour of God. Hold the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God) in your hand and in your heart. Be as the men of Gibeon when they realized the enemy was coming against them. They called out to Joshua for help. We have a greater than Joshua who has made a league (covenant) with us. Call upon the Lord Jesus Christ for help. Surround yourself with Godly people and Godly influences.

As I find myself under attack, I must lean heavily upon the power of the Almighty to see me through. I must stand strong in the power of His might. I need to remind myself constantly that He loves me unconditionally. He died for the forgiveness and cleansing of my sin. I am His and none can tear me from that place; therefore, I have strength to withstand the attack. May God help us all as we are under the attack of the evil one even at this time.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Psalm 100:4-5 - Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:4-5     "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  (5)  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." Many songs have been written about these verses and with these words included. What do they mean? Today, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. I've listened to many people speak about their family traditions and most of them include family, food, and football. These are wonderful and fun things that enrich the day, but is it the true meaning that was intended when the day was established?  The Psalmist instructed us to include a special action with our words of thankfulness.  We are to "enter into HIS gates." The heartfelt words of thanksgiving allow us to enter the gates of the Lord, but there is a much deeper place into which we can go. Not only are we to enter into HIS gates, but He invites us to come much closer to H...
