Daily Devotion: Joshua 6:24-25 & 27

Joshua 6:24-25    "And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.  (25)  And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho."

Joshua 6:27    "So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country."

The Lord gave an incredible victory unto Israel. I find myself using descriptive words that are the ultimate in trying to show the greatness of God in the manner He dealt with Israel. As they were obedient unto the Lord, He gave them victory after victory. Miracle after miracle was shown as they continued to do the things the Lord commanded them to do. This is after forty years of wandering around because they had declined to follow the Lord into the land promised to them. The Lord is gracious and merciful and is confirming Himself to this generation of obedient people.

My mind keeps wondering, "Why did they completely destroy this city?" I'm sure the houses were very nice and livable and could have been used by families for the rest of their lives.  But the thought keeps coming to me that this was one of the cities that caused the people to doubt the intention of the Lord to give them the land. I do not pretend to know the mind of God, but it seems to me that the Lord was going to show the people that the very thing which struck fear into the hearts of the people could not stand against the power of God. The Lord was showing them His omnipotent power would see them through.  Those things which strike fear into our hearts cannot stand against the awesome power of the Almighty God.

The promise was made to save Rahab and her family. Joshua was faithful to that promise. He sent the two young men who had been spies into the city to bring her out along with her mother and father and brothers. Other than this family, the only thing saved by the people was the silver and gold. It was placed into the Lord's treasury. God had given ultimate victory. The smoke of Jericho rose into the air for all the other people of Canaan to see what was coming their way. The power of God was shown in a mighty manner. The fame of the Lord and Joshua was spread throughout the land.

Fear can cause us to become frozen in our actions. I'm reminded of the Psalmist just now when he said, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee." You can know this morning that we serve the same Lord Who brought down the walls of Jericho. His power is the same today as it always has been. You can trust Him.
