Daily Devotion: Joshua 21:43-45

Joshua 21:43-45    "And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.  (44)  And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.  (45)  There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass."

The larger portion of chapter 21 speaks of the children of Israel giving cities to the Levites. Each tribe of Israel gave cities to them as the Lord had promised that the Levites would have provision in the land. There was a mutual benefit from this process. The Levites were provided for, but also the influence of the Levites would be felt within each tribe. Remember the Levites were the ones who had charge of the tabernacle. They were the ones who maintained all the vessels of worship for the tabernacle and later for the temple that would be built unto the Lord. When the way of the Lord is followed, we can be assured that both temporal and eternal benefits are to be experienced in our lives. The Lord does provide!

Today's verses simply reaffirm a great truth that seems to be remembered in our day and time: There failed not of any good thing the Lord had spoken. Should you and I be able to find comfort in this great truth? I believe so.  In these verses we find these great, but simple, truths by which we shoul be able to live our lives. The Lord fulfilled His promise that He had made to Abraham centuries before: He gave unto all Israel all the land promised to them.  They possessed the land because God had given them victory after victory. The Lord gave them rest; that is, they were able to settle down in their new land and find quietness in their lives. God did everything He had said He would do.

I believe God never changes. Some would say our study is of ancient history. I say our study is of the only True and Living God. Circumstances may be different. Situations may be different. Geographical locations may be different. But human nature remains the same as it has been since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. AND, most important, God remains the same. We study. We learn. We trust. We live.  May we all find peace in Him.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
