Daily Devotion: The Light Shined - Isaiah 9:2

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. – Isaiah 9:2
When we were deep in the cave, the guide spoke into his radio, “Turn out the lights.” This was my introduction into absolute darkness. At a tender age, I trembled in the pitch blackness waiting impatiently for the lights to come back on. Nothing can truly prepare you for the experience, but without Christ, everyone is just the same. Wondering about groping for answers until even this futile hope is abandoned, and without hope, the lost either relent or embrace the darkness.
Fearful and maybe angry at the one we blame for the disorientation and confusion that comes from a complete loss of light, our instincts scream, “Run!” But where do we run? Without vision, we can only scramble about. We need light. We need salvation.
Only a savior can provide salvation, and knowing His people could not save themselves, God sent His Son, the Savior. “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not” (John 1:4-5). “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
Praise the Lord for His light, and commit yourself to see the Light and walk in it. This is our calling. This is our purpose.
