Daily Devotion: 2 Chronicles 32:7-8

2 Chronicles 32:7-8    "Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:  (8)  With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah."

When the time of sacrificial offering unto the Lord was over, the people of Judah began to cleanse the land of all the idols and groves that had been established under the reign of Ahaz. King Hezekiah began to fortify the cities outside the walls of Jerusalem. He sought the Lord with all his heart and was blessed in all that was being done.  But as often is the case, Satan does not like when God's people are active.  There was great joy and prosperity and then suddenly the king of Assyria decided he wanted to overtake that which had been prosperous. His army was vast and intimidating. Satan can be intimidating.

Hezekiah calls together his princes and mighty men to seek their advice. Their wisdom was such as to say, "Cut off the water supply to the area where the Assyrians have gathered."  To weaken anything, cut off the supply that feeds it. For any weakness that we may have in the flesh, cut off that which feeds the weakness. The opposite of that is this - When we cut off that which supplies our spiritual side, we become weakened.  When our Bible study time is limited, we become weaker in our Christian walk. When our prayer time is shortened, we become weaker in our Christian walk. When we have habits that are not the best for us, we should cut off anything that gives opportunity for that habit to be fed.  Hezekiah cut off the water supply to the Assyrians.

We will see in future studies they do not give up easily. Satan does not give up easily either. But the great truth spoken in our text today is one to which we should hold. When we go against the wiles of the devil, we can know that there are more with us than are with him. The LORD our God is our help and there is none greater!  John's epistle states it in this manner: "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1 John 4:4)  Let us make it a practice to seek the Lord in all things and lean heavily upon Him for the strength and courage that is needed each day.

Daily Devotion: Knowing God By Bearing Fruit

Some will notice the title is not “Bearing fruit because we know God,” so to avoid getting sidetracked with that, we can start with the fact that we won’t bear any godly fruit unless our heart has been changed and the Holy Spirit dwells within us.
