John 18:37-38 "Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. (38) Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all."
"What is truth?" Isn't it amazing that everyone seems to have
their slant on what is truth? I hope through the years, I have gained
more knowledge of truth than when I was young. Although as a teenager, I felt I
knew it all. Even as a young preacher, I felt I knew it all. I
surely hope I have grown in knowledge of truth in the past 35 years of study
and trying to proclaim God's Word. But I confess to you that I still have
much to learn. But if the Word of God declares something, I can assure
you that it is truth. And the Word of God does not contradict itself. It
will not say in one place that redemption is absolutely unconditional and then
later place a condition on becoming a child of God. But also, the Word of
God does place conditions on being saved into the kingdom of Heaven (kingdom of
God) whereby we can experience the blessed assurance of salvation with peace
and joy in our hearts. The Word of God is truth.
"What is truth?" Pilate asked this question of the Lord Jesus
Christ and then he turned around and answered the question as he went out to
the Jews. What is the answer to that question? "I find in Him no
fault." If that answer is not correct, then nothing upon which we base our
daily lives is correct. If that answer is not correct, then the North Star is
in the wrong place. If that answer is not correct, then the Sun is not the center
of our solar system. If that answer is not correct, then day is night and night
is day. If that answer is not correct, there is no gravitational pull. If that
answer is not correct, two plus two does not equal four. Pilate
absolutely answered his own question, "What is truth?"
"What is truth?" If Pilate's answer is not truth, then we can
throw out certain passages of the Bible. In fact, if Pilate's answer is not
truth, then the Bible is of no benefit to us. As we look at Pilate's answer,
you and I can see beyond those eight words to the heart of the matter.
"I find in Him no fault at all." If that is not truth,
then we are not reconciled unto God. "For if, when we were enemies,
we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled,
we shall be saved by his life." (Romans 5:10) We were enemies of God
and had no desire to bring ourselves in alignment with Him. Only the perfect,
sinless Son of God could reconcile us.
Think about how these passages would be of no effect to us, if Jesus Christ is
not the perfect, sinless Son of God. And these are only a few.
"But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
(5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with
Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)" (Ephesians 2:4-5)
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Corinthians 5:21)
"For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,
that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened
by the Spirit" (1 Peter 3:18)
If Pilate's answer is not truth, then this next verse has no effect on us. In
fact, if Pilate's answer is not truth, then this verse is incorrect.
"Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with
him: (9) Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no
more; death hath no more dominion over him." (Romans 6:8-9)
You see, if Pilate's answer is not correct, there is a tomb somewhere that has
the DNA of Jesus in it. If his answer is incorrect, then Jesus simply died on
the cross and was buried.
Oh! But dear saint of God.... Pilate's answer is absolute! There was no
fault in Jesus. There is no fault in Jesus. He is the perfect, sinless Son of
God Who laid down His life for His people. He came to save His people from
their sins and HE DID! He died on the cross, not because His life was
taken. He died on the cross because He willingly laid it down. Death had no
hold on Jesus because there was no fault (sin) in Him. His lifeless body
was laid in the tomb by those who were saddened and mourning His death.
But Praise God, three days and nights later, He arose from that tomb!
He's Alive! Our sins are forgiven! We belong to God through the
perfect sinless sacrifice of our precious Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ!
Rejoice! Rejoice! Pilate found no fault in Him. There is no
fault in Him! Because of Him, we shall stand before God blameless and
without fault.
