Daily Devotion: Hebrews 2:1

Hebrews 2:1   "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip."

Anytime we see the word, "therefore," we should stop to look at previous verses to see why it's there for.  The books of the Bible were written as letters. Later, chapter and verse numbers were added for our convenience. I am thankful the divisions were added, but sometimes we lose the connection of what was written just previously.

So for today's verse and today's "therefore", let us look back at the last verse of chapter one.  "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?" (Hebrews 1:14) This verse is speaking of angels as being ministering spirits, or servants of the Lord. What do you think of when you vision an angel? If you are like most of us, we think of angelic beings robed in white with wings and they spend all their time just flying around or laying on clouds.  But, let's think in a different direction for a moment.  Have you ever heard someone say to another who did a kind deed, "You're just an angel"?  In the book of Revelation, the pastors of the churches are called angels.  "Ministering spirits" can take on many forms. No doubt, there are cherubims and seraphims described in the Bible. They have one purpose: glorify and praise the most high God.

Angels bring the message of God and they do it in many forms.  I would like to think the message of God's grace and mercy through the shed blood of Jesus Christ would be an angelic message to one who is burdened with sin in his life.  Someone who makes a phone call to check on another could be considered a "ministering spirit" to a lonely soul.  Sometimes, the ministering spirit comes in a smile and a genuine, "How are you doing?"  Sometimes, it is the soft whisper to the heart, "I am with you always."

The writer of Hebrews tells us in today's verse of Scripture, "give heed" to those messages that are sent from God. Pay attention to the things that God places in our lives that minister to us.  Today's thoughts are in general form. From this point forward in the book of Hebrews, we will see the great messages that have been given to us that bring peace and joy to our hearts. We will be looking for the things "spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds."  We hope to give earnest heed to the things we hear in order to find peace and joy in our hearts. We do not want to let them slip past us.  This book is going to minister to our souls in a very wonderful way.

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
