Hebrews 3:1-2 "Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; (2) Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house."
From this point, we will not look at every verse, but will try to look for the
focus of each chapter. I'm not saying we will only have one devotion per
chapter, but will try to concentrate on the message presented.
"Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ
Jesus." This is the total focus of the rest of the study of Hebrews.
I do not recall any other place where Jesus is referred to as an Apostle.
But when you think of His advent, you realize He was sent into this earth for a
purpose. The difference between a disciple and an apostle is one follows and
the other is sent. Yes, an apostle follows the direction of the Father and Holy
Spirit as they go forward. It is my thought there were no more apostles after
the Word of God was completed. We are disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yes, Jesus was sent by the Father. "But when the fulness of the time was
come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, (5) To
redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of
sons." (Galatians 4:4-5) Yes, He was sent and He was faithful to
that for which He was sent. He redeemed His people.
Jesus "was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful
in all his house." We usually think of Moses not being able to enter the
promised land when we think of the work to which he was sent. But in this
passage, we are told Moses was faithful. How can this be? It seems we
need to remember the work to which Moses was sent. He was not told to take the
people into the promised land; rather, he was sent to bring the people of
Israel out of Egypt. I'm not trying to justify the anger and rebellion of
Moses. But I must say a hearty amen to the Word of God: "Moses was
faithful in all his house."
What can you and I take from these words? We sometimes feel we have not
accomplished all that God would have us to do. We must be careful to understand
God's calling upon us into His work. Paul said to the Corinthians,
"I have planted and Apollos has watered." He understood God had
given each one of them a specific work to do. We may be one building block in
the house of God, but let us be faithful to that which God leads us.
