Daily Devotion: Hebrews 11:3

Hebrews 11:3    "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

I read once of two astronomers who had an ongoing "discussion" concerning creation.  One took the stance of the big bang theory and evolution. The other believed  God spoke this universe into existence in a perfect manner.  The astronomer who took the stance that God spoke the universe into existence was given a model of the solar system built to scale.  One day the astronomer who believed in the big bang theory walked into the office of the other and saw this model. He was amazed at how perfectly the model had been built to scale. He asked the creationist, "Where did you get that perfectly scaled model of the solar system?" The creationist looked at him and said, "The other day I heard a large crash and when I walked into my office, this solar system had suddenly appeared."  Of course the evolutionist did not believe that account of the model being built, but the creationist made his point.  The solar system in which we live did not come about as a result of an accident.  We believe God created this universe by speaking it into existence. What a mighty God we serve!

I received a birthday card once that began with "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) When I opened the card it asked, "How was it back then?" Of course, no one was with God, other than Himself, when He created this universe. In fact, I believe he waited until the sixth day to create man in order to prevent man from trying to take credit for helping God.   "In the beginning, God..."  Through this precious gift of faith, we can know and understand God framed the worlds by His Word. "Things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."  If I could put this in a very simple form: God took nothing and made something out of it.

In a fictional story, a scientist is talking to God. He declares to God that he had the power to take clay and give it life. As they were talking, God told him to go ahead and try. The man said, "First I need some clay."  God said, "Make your own clay."   God took NOTHING and made this universe. In the beginning was God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) and no one nor anything else. Only God existed.

Only those who have this precious gift called faith can understand the things spoken. For you see, it is "through faith" that we can "understand."   "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." (Genesis 1:2). We serve a mighty God who took emptiness and gave it form. Praise His Holy Name for this same God took this empty sinner and gave him form and purpose.

Daily Devotion: Psalm 88:1-4

Psalm 88:1-4  A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  (2)  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;  (3)  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.  (4)  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength" I've said this before and I will say it again (and probably more times before we get to the end of the Psalms) - I love the Psalms because I can surely identify with them. Most Psalms start in a low place and as the writer expresses his thoughts, the Lord begins to lift him up out of that dry place.  Though this entire Psalm is a fervent cry unto the Lord, the Psalmist tells us specifically in three verses that he cried daily unto the Lord. Just a few Psalms ago, we were reminded that God always hears our prayers. ...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
