Daily Devotion: Deuteronomy 7:4

Deuteronomy 7:4    "For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly."

"For they will turn away thy son." God is giving warnings to His children and in turn, they are to give warning to their children. He tells them, concerning the people in the land of Canaan, that they will have gods that are contrary to Him. He tells the people to "utterly destroy them." There was a reason for this instruction concerning the people. The influence of their gods would cause the people of Israel to turn away if they were not destroyed.

The sad commentary about the Israelites is found a generation later. They did not follow God's instruction to destroy all the nations that had inhabited Canaan before the land was given to them. They allowed some, or portions, of the nations to remain.  It did not happen overnight, but the influence of those people and their worship of false gods would indeed gain influence over many of the people of God.  That influence and the ensuing battles remain to this very day.

In the New Testament, we read the words of Jesus, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod." (Mark 8:15)  The explanation for this statement is found in the words of Paul, "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump." (Galatians 5:9)  God continues to warn us today concerning the influence of worldly devices and philosophy.  Just as leaven slowly infiltrates the entire lump of flour as its influence grows, so does the philosophy and influences of the world.

It is of the utmost importance to each of us today that we remain on guard concerning what we allow to enter our lives.  Satan is indeed subtle in his ways.  He is patient, but always has one ultimate goal, that is to destroy our daily relationship with our precious Lord.  The things that are happening in our nation are not overnight changes. The leaven of today's destruction of life as we have known it began several decades ago. It all seemed fun and freedom, but underneath Satan was following his plan to lead our nation away from its very foundation of being, "One nation under God, indivisible."

We must be diligent in standing for that which is the way of the Lord rather than the way of the world. "For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly."

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
