Daily Devotion: Psalm 11:3-4

Psalm 11:3-4    "If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?  (4)  The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD'S throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men."

We live in a time where it seems the foundations of America are crumbling.  Many different thoughts are running through my mind as I try to write this devotion.  As it is Memorial Day, I think about the multitude of wonderful men and women who gave their very lives to defend the foundation of this great land. Yes, it is still a great land.

"He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:  (29)  Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?" (Hebrews 10:28-29)  We hear constant cries across our land that new laws need to be written. They think the penalty of the law will deter criminals; yet, those criminals are released and back on the street before the arresting officer can even complete the paperwork. What does this have to do with our devotion and what does it have to do with the Scripture from Hebrews?  They think man's laws are the proper foundation and answer, but God has told us the root of the problem is in despising the Spirit of grace which is found through the blood of Jesus Christ. Man's laws will not stop the criminal if the fear of God does not deter.  You see, the foundations of America are being destroyed because we have turned away from God.  We do not have a weapon matter; rather, we have a heart matter.

What is the answer?  We hear it over and over, but apparently it is not being applied. We must return to God.  What can the righteous do? If I am counted as one of those righteous, then I must turn my face to the One Who is still in His holy temple and is still seated upon His throne of righteous judgment.  "For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart." (Psalm 11:2)  The wicked have hidden agendas as they try to promote their actions as being good.  Under the cover of sin's darkness, they are pulling the string back to shoot the arrows of wickedness to try to destroy the righteous.

Are we to bow to their level to fight them? Are we to sink to the level of trying to "get even" with them?  What can the righteous do? We cannot lose our trust in the grace, power, and purpose of our Lord God Almighty! Be assured the Lord sees all things and knows all things. He knows exactly what is happening.  Anything we do before seeking His face would be wrong. But if we follow the directions given to Israel of old, we can find the foundations being rebuilt and strengthened.  This may not seem like a Memorial Day message, but I believe we cannot despise the blood of Jesus neither can we despise the blood of the millions who have given their lives for us to be able to enjoy the blessings of freedom. We must stand fast upon the Word of God and do that which the Lord directs us to do.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
