Psalm
8:1-4 "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in
all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. (2) Out of
the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine
enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. (3) When
I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which
thou hast ordained; (4) What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"
"O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!" Is it possible
that there are times in our lives when we lose sight of that precious
truth? We might, at first, say, "Oh no, I would never lose sight of
that." But think about it. Just to look at this from the surface, do
we lose our awe at those things we call nature? Do we lose that interest that a
young child has in those things which we walk past without giving a second
thought? A child picks up a roly-poly bug and holds it in his hand,
watching as it rolls up in a little ball. We think they are a nuisance. A
child picks a dandelion and blows it just to watch how the little seeds drift
through the air. We see them as weeds and want to get rid of them. Yet,
the truth of the matter is that these things and so many other things that we
can't even count are gifts from God that show His power and glory in that which
we call nature. "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!"
Sometimes those "babes and sucklings" are newly converted children of
God who are absolutely amazed that God would love them and send His Son to die
for them. Can we remember the thrill and joy when we first learned the
blessed truth of Jesus Christ? There was a time when we soaked up the Word of
God like a sponge and absolutely could not get enough of it. With time,
it seems that zeal and fire to know more seems to fade. Human nature is
such that we tend to take for granted those incredible things which are given
to us. But the truth remains: "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy
name!"
You see, there is no other name given under heaven or among men whereby we must
be saved. "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!" At the
name of Jesus, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess, "O
LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!" There is peace and
comfort to be experienced in our hearts and minds when we mention the name of
Jesus. "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!" Satan must
flee at the very name of Jesus. "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy
name!"
"What is man that thou art mindful of him?" I am not worthy to even
mention that precious name, but by God's amazing grace He has given us the
privilege to mention that name. May we ever speak that name with humble
gratitude and humility. "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name!"
