Daily Devotion: Psalm 18:28-30

Psalm 18:28-30    "For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness  (29)  For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.  (30)  As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him."

Have you ever laid at night, wishing for the dawn? The darkness of night brings out noises that are not heard during the daytime. Sometimes, we can even hear our own hearts beating in the nighttime. Imaginations tend to run wild in the darkness.  Time seems to come to a standstill. I go back to a phrase from yesterday: "But the LORD was (is) my stay." (Psalm 18:18) In a later Psalm, we will see this thought expressed in another manner, "If it had not been the LORD who was on our side..." (Psalm 124:1,2)

What does the Lord being our stay and being on our side accomplish for us? That answer cannot be expressed in one sentence, but in the context of today's passage we find enlightenment when the Lord is on our side. We find a calmness when the Lord is on our side. Darkness can bring nervousness, anxiety, and fear but with God we find that He "... wilt light my candle."  Jesus Christ is the Light of the world and He is fully capable of restoring that calmness into our souls with His very presence. There is something about that name that reminds us of the absolute sovereign love of God that was given to us unconditionally.

When our darkness is driven away by the presence and strength of our Lord, we find courage and encouragement to face each day. The Word of God is that lamp that lights our path to show us the way to where we not only feel the presence, we KNOW the presence of the Lord is with us. "He is a buckler to all those that trust in Him."  On more than one occasion, the Lord told Israel that the battle was the Lord's, not their's. He literally told them to stand still and watch what He would do in order for them to continue in the forward direction in which He was leading them.

Are you in a dark place?  Do you know someone who is struggling in spiritual darkness?  Whisper the name of Jesus. But let me tell you, this is not magical mystical chant.. NO!  This is the absolute truth of the risen Lord and Saviour, the very Son of God who died for you, was buried to take away your sins, and was raised again after three days and nights.  He is the Living Lord!  It isn't a magical thing to whisper His name... It is a matter of trusting Him... truly trusting the resurrecting power of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ. Whisper His name in absolute trust and belief in His grace and mercy.

There's Something About That Name by Bill Gaither

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there’s just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Psalm 100:4-5 - Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:4-5     "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  (5)  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." Many songs have been written about these verses and with these words included. What do they mean? Today, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. I've listened to many people speak about their family traditions and most of them include family, food, and football. These are wonderful and fun things that enrich the day, but is it the true meaning that was intended when the day was established?  The Psalmist instructed us to include a special action with our words of thankfulness.  We are to "enter into HIS gates." The heartfelt words of thanksgiving allow us to enter the gates of the Lord, but there is a much deeper place into which we can go. Not only are we to enter into HIS gates, but He invites us to come much closer to H...
