Psalm 21:5-6 "His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him. (6) For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance."
In these verses, we see the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. "HIS
glory is great!" When in the New Testament did we first hear the
word, great, as it concerns the Messiah, Jesus the Christ? The angel speaking
to Mary said, "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord." (Luke
1:15) In that same conversation, we hear the angel saying, "He shall
be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall
give unto him the throne of his father David." (Luke 1:32) Then Mary
speaking to her cousin Elizabeth said, "For he that is mighty hath done to
me great things; and holy is his name." (Luke 1:49) At the birth of
Jesus, we hear the angel saying to the shepherds, "And the angel said unto
them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people." (Luke 2:10)
"His glory is great. He shall be great in the sight of the LORD. He that
is mighty hath done great things to me. I bring you good tidings of great
joy." What is it about this One named Jesus? What makes Him
great? Well, of course the obvious answer is He is the only begotten Son
of God. He was conceived of the Holy Ghost and born of a virgin named
Mary. His birth brought great tidings of great joy. His life and
the instructions He gave brought great joy to those who heard Him and still to
us today. But what exactly about Jesus caused the word, great, to be used so
many different times?
He is glorious because He came to achieve one main thing, without which none of
His teachings or His healings or His compassions or mercies, or anything else
would have been enough to sustain. What is the one thing that causes Him to be
great? The answer is found, among other places, in Psalm 21:5, "His
glory is great in thy salvation." I go back to the angel before the
birth of Jesus. He sure was a busy angel, wasn't he? When Joseph questioned
Mary's being with child, the angel appeared to him and said, "Fear not to
take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost. (21) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call
his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (Matthew
1:20-21)
Yes, Jesus came for that one reason in which His true glory appears. He came to
save His people from their sins. Now, if He did not accomplish that, then all
the statements about His glory and His greatness are false. But let us
hear some of the final words of Jesus on the cross, "When Jesus therefore
had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and
gave up the ghost." (John 19:30) He came to save His people from
their sins. He spoke the absolute truth when He declared that work of
redemption to be finished. He completed the work through the shedding of His
holy and righteous blood. "HIS GLORY IS GREAT!"
