Daily Devotion: Psalm 23:2-3

Psalm 23:2-3    "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  (3)  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."

I realize when someone writes a devotion, or a series of devotions, it is impossible not to put his own experience into those devotions.  It is impossible not to write current events into those devotions. But at the same time, I am thankful that the Word of God was given to us in such a manner that it touches us where we live.  The Bible would be just another work of literature if we could not gain personal knowledge, understanding, and instructions from the Word of God.

We live in a time when people are in a rush to get wherever they're going.  The highways are filled with people driving cars who are in a hurry to arrive.  When beginning a fitness program, we are in a hurry to see results. When we are not feeling good, we are in a hurry to get better. Maybe that's part of human nature, but I have to believe we have programmed ourselves to be in a hurry.  We become uneasy if we think we have nothing to do. We often refuse to allow ourselves to enjoy a sabbath of rest. We read the words of Jesus in Mark 2:27, "And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath."  God made our bodies to require rest. He set aside a day of rest for us. On that day, we are to think upon His goodness, grace, and mercy.  Meditating upon our Lord gives us a time of relaxation and rejuvenation.

David spoke those thoughts in our verses for today. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  (3)  He restoreth my soul."  It is the thought of many people that if we refuse to allow ourselves a regular time to rest that the Lord will place us in the position where we must look up to Him.  He makes me to lie down. I thank Him that in that time of rest, He provides restoration. Our bodies rebuild during the night when we are asleep.  God provides both the natural and spiritual nutrition for us to be able to continue in this thing called life.  Oftentimes, it seems we are too busy to stop and listen to what God is saying to us. We often even neglect how our bodies feel as the Lord speaks to us through our own bodies. It is so very important in this time of rushing around that we stop and simply "be still" before the Lord.

After we have had a time of renewal, then the Lord leads us in the paths of righteousness.  Sometimes we get so tired that our minds do not work well enough to make proper decisions.  The Lord is so good in leading us, but quite honestly we must take time to stop and listen to Him. When was the last time you took the time to just be still before the Lord? When was the last time you ended your prayer with a time of quietness before God?  He is glorious in all His works. He is glorious in the way He leads us. Our Lord is glorious!

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
