Psalm 29:1-2 "Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. (2) Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness."
If we are honest with ourselves, most of our prayers consist of, "Lord,
give me...." We might be asking God to give us blessings of many
different natures, but the bottom line is prayer is often seen as a
"request line" for God to meet our needs. I'm not saying that
is wrong, for we do need the Lord's blessings in our lives. We are daily
blessed beyond measure with many things that we take for granted. I just
stopped to fill my lungs with air. What a true blessing that is from our Lord
for which I worship and praise His Name.
As we spend time realizing how much our Lord does indeed bless us, we should
stop to give unto Him. What can we possibly give unto Him? David gives us some
answers in this Psalm. First of all, we give glory and honour to Him. We
see the sunrise and the sunset each day. Thank you Lord for your faithfulness
in your creation. We hear a newborn baby crying. Thank you Lord for the
gift of life. We are blessed to get through any particular struggle.
Thank you Lord for you have given me the strength, wisdom, and ability to
endure each day.
"Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name." He introduced
Himself to Abraham as "the Almighty God." He introduced Himself to
Moses as "Jehovah." He introduced Himself to Joshua as the
"captain of the Lord's host." He introduced Himself to us as Saviour.
He has that name that is above all names, that name whereby we must be saved,
the name that is our Wonderful Counselor, and that name that says He is
Redeemer. That name is "Jesus."
His name is certainly beautiful and wonderful. True worship comes from our
hearts as we think upon His goodness and majesty. Worship does not
consist simply of expressing our need; rather, worship is praise, honor, glory,
and thanksgiving offered to Him because of all that He is and all that He does.
"Worship the LORD in the beauty of (His) holiness." For me, that
demands that I approach Him as humbly as I possibly can in order to be certain
the Lord is at the center of all action of worship. John the Baptist said it
best concerning Jesus, "He must increase, but I must decrease."
(John 3:30) We have to be able to set ourselves to the side and
see Jesus as the true focus of our worship and praise. The result of
this brings great peace and joy into our hearts and minds.
