Daily Devotion: Psalm 33:8

Psalm 33:8    "Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him."

The first seven verses of this Psalm speak to us of just a few things done by the Lord for which we are to praise Him.  He reminds us that the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.  It is the goodness of the Lord that allows the sun to rise on a regular schedule every day and sets on a regular schedule. It is the Lord's goodness that secures the four seasons of the year. And may I add, by the Word of the Lord, this shall be until the time our Lord returns to take us all home.

There might be some swings as far as how hot our summers are or how cold our winters are, but be assured the Lord created and sustains and man cannot overthrow or undo what the Lord has done.  It seems that too many have lost that awe of God to think that man could possibly be strong enough to overpower the decrees of God.  "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." (Genesis 8:22)   "Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him."

Here is another decree, made by God, spoken by Jesus.  "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.  (39)  And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day." (John 6:38-39)  What was the Father's will concerning His Son Who was sent into this world?  Joseph was concerned because he knew the baby being carried by Mary was not His.  The angel of the Lord came to him and assured him there was no reason to be concerned.  "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21)  The Lord sent His Son to this earth, by decree, to perform a specific work: "He shall save His people from their sins." Jesus' reply to that was, "...of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."  Did Jesus accomplish that work of redemption or not?  We read in the book of John 19:30, "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, IT IS FINISHED (emphasis mine): and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost."  Either Jesus did what He came to do, or He failed.  I stand in awe of His blessed work and stand in assurance that Jesus did exactly what He came to do, without my help or anyone else's.

I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus, the Nazarene,
And wonder how he could love me
A sinner condemned, unclean
(Charles Gabriel)

Let us never lose our awe of our blessed Lord. Yes, He is closer than a brother; yet, He is LORD of all.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Psalm 100:4-5 - Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:4-5     "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  (5)  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." Many songs have been written about these verses and with these words included. What do they mean? Today, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. I've listened to many people speak about their family traditions and most of them include family, food, and football. These are wonderful and fun things that enrich the day, but is it the true meaning that was intended when the day was established?  The Psalmist instructed us to include a special action with our words of thankfulness.  We are to "enter into HIS gates." The heartfelt words of thanksgiving allow us to enter the gates of the Lord, but there is a much deeper place into which we can go. Not only are we to enter into HIS gates, but He invites us to come much closer to H...
