Daily Devotion: Psalm 36:8-10

Psalm 36:8-10      "They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.  (9)  For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light.  (10)  O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee; and thy righteousness to the upright in heart."

David is speaking of and to a particular group of people.  The effect that is placed upon this group of people is satisfaction of heart and mind. Satisfaction and contentment are two things that are very special and much needed in our lives, wouldn't you think?  With satisfaction and contentment, we find joy and peace.  But who are these people to whom David is speaking of satisfaction?  We find back in verse seven that those who find satisfaction are those who "put their trust under the shadow of thy wings."  It is a very evident truth that this blessing of satisfaction is not found in the things of this world. If satisfaction was found in the world, we would still be using "wringer washers." We would still be walking everywhere we go instead of riding in luxurious automobiles. Companies would be out of business instead of looking to "improve their product."

There is true satisfaction when we truly place our trust and confidence in the Lord. We are blessed with constant refreshing of our souls when our confidence is in Him. "The river of His pleasures" is a constant flowing grace that comes from the very throne of God.  "There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High." (Psalm 46:4)  "And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb." (Revelation 22:1)  "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)

Why is it that many of God's people seemingly cannot find this peace and assurance in their lives?  Could it be that for many, the scale of blessing from the Lord is based upon things that are seen rather than things that are unseen?  By that, I mean could it be we set our affection on the blessing rather than the Blessor?  When we have placed our trust under the shadow of His wings, we have set our hearts and minds upon the Lord Himself rather than the things we hold in our hands.
