Psalm 37:7-9 "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (8) Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. (9) For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth."
The Psalmist instructs us to "rest, or find comfort, in the LORD."
Have you ever heard a baby crying until his mother picks him up and holds
him close to her? There is often an instant quieting of that baby because
he recognizes and has complete trust in the love of his mother. We read the
words of the Lord in Isaiah 66:13 "As one whom his mother
comforteth, so will I comfort you..."
How can we come to that place of resting in the Lord's grace? It might
possibly consist of enduring a time of realizing our total inability to provide
for ourselves. As long as we think we have control, we are not "resting in
the Lord." As long as we think we have the answers, we are not
"resting in the Lord." As long as we think we have to "do
something" of our own choosing, we are not "resting in the
Lord."
In the days of King Jehoshaphat, the enemy had the city of Jerusalem
surrounded. There was no way for them to move without great devastation. The
king called all the people together. He fell to his knees and began to pray
unto the Lord. As he began to pray, he confessed his lack of ability and wisdom
to provide the proper protection for the people. But in that prayer, he
expressed his trust, his resting, his quietness before the Lord when he said,
'I don't know what to do, "but our eyes are upon you, O Lord."
You will find this account in 2 Chronicles chapter 20.
In resting upon the Lord, he was stating that he was not only willing, but he
had been brought to the place where he had to place all dependence upon the
Lord and he was going to wait for the Lord's answer. In waiting upon the Lord,
he was given instruction from God as to how to overcome the enemy. He experienced
the great truth that was stated by David in Psalm 37:9, "Those that wait
upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth."
Am I willing to trust? Am I willing to commit my work unto the Lord's way? Am I
willing to wait upon the Lord to show His grace, mercy, and power upon my
life? If I do those things, there is great delight (joy) to be
experienced to see the Lord's loving way applied to my life.
