Daily Devotion: Psalm 47:4

Psalm 47:4    "He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah."

From early in life until late in life, we want to make our own decisions. We hear much today about "choice".  To be very direct about this matter, wanting to make my own choice stems from the source of selfish pride. It is saying, "I know more than anyone else."  Quite honestly, we are not smart enough to always make intelligent choices.  Most "self choices" that are made result in disappointment.

Today's text tells us that "He (God) shall choose our inheritance for us."  I, personally, am thankful that my God has made a choice for me.  I'm not smart enough to choose God because I get distracted by all the "bells and whistles" of life.  In order to understand and rejoice in this great truth, we must understand that our God is indeed the GOD. If we could take our thoughts of God to the very extreme, He would still be larger than that. He has all power both in heaven and in earth. He has full knowledge of all things. It is by His knowledge that every molecule and atom correctly performs every millisecond of time. He knows how to maintain the proper mix of gases for the atmosphere to be correct to sustain life on earth. He made our bodies to work in such a miraculous way.

God never changes. How many times have you made a choice of something only to regret it five minutes later? Have you ever purchased an automobile only to drive it a few blocks and see something else that you wish you had purchased?  How many times  have  you made a purchase and then returned it for a refund?  One of the busiest departments in any store following Christmas is the "returns" department. Why? Someone made a choice for you but it was not the correct size, color, or was a duplicate of something you already had.

Understanding our inability to make proper choices, or decisions, should bring great joy when we can properly understand "HE shall choose our inheritance for us."  We read the words of Jesus, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  (3)  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14:2-3)  We can be assured that the place prepared for us by Jesus is perfect for us.  Then we read the words Peter was inspired to write: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,  (4)  To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you." (1 Peter 1:3-4)  This inheritance which was chosen by God is "reserved in heaven for YOU."  He has made the perfect choice and it is reserved only for you, and no one else.

Why did God make this perfect choice? There's only one reason: "He loves you unconditionally."  We are just as Jacob - unloveable; yet God made the choice of Jacob over Esau. God made His choice of you for only one reason - He loves you with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31:3)  Rejoice, and again I say, Rejoice! The Lord loves you!

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
