Daily Devotion: Psalm 105:8

Psalm 105:8    "He hath remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations."

As I began to read this 105th Psalm, I thought to myself that this theme is repeated throughout the Psalms. It seems that I find myself writing about the same thing over and over. For instance, this Psalm begins with:

"O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.  (2)  Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.  (3)  Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.  (4)  Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore." (Psalm 105:1-4)

How many times have we read those words since we began these devotions in the book of Psalms? The answer is that we have read them many many times. As a pastor, I find myself repeating examples and my favorite passages of Scripture many times.  I sometimes jokingly place a number on my examples, "If you have heard this one before, it's number 14."  Throughout the Scriptures, there are many situations that are repeated. For instance, we can read in several places the reminder that God created this universe. In today's Psalm, you can read how God began with His promise to Abraham to give a land promised to him. We read often of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. These are constant reminders of God's grace, mercy, love, and faithfulness. Today's Psalm is another reminder of that.

God remembers His covenant (His promise) forever.  Why is it necessary for us to be reminded of His faithfulness?  Could it be that He is constantly reminding us because we are a forgetful bunch of people?  Could it be that we are too quick in turning away from the Lord to the things of this world thinking that will satisfy our hungry souls?  Could it be that we need reminding of His faithfulness because we are not always faithful to Him?

Therefore, we read in many places, "Give thanks unto the Lord. Sing unto Him. Talk of all His wonderful works. Seek Him. Seek His strength. Seek His love, mercy, and grace."  God is faithful. He remembers His promise of a better land, of a better place.  Yes, He has promised heaven eternal to us, but in this life, we can enjoy a wonderful foretaste of that joy by walking humbling with the Lord God Almighty. That foretaste of peace and joy is called the Kingdom of heaven and we can enjoy it as we go through this life.  He remembers. May we remember also.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: Psalm 100:4-5 - Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:4-5     "Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  (5)  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations." Many songs have been written about these verses and with these words included. What do they mean? Today, we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. I've listened to many people speak about their family traditions and most of them include family, food, and football. These are wonderful and fun things that enrich the day, but is it the true meaning that was intended when the day was established?  The Psalmist instructed us to include a special action with our words of thankfulness.  We are to "enter into HIS gates." The heartfelt words of thanksgiving allow us to enter the gates of the Lord, but there is a much deeper place into which we can go. Not only are we to enter into HIS gates, but He invites us to come much closer to H...
