Daily Devotion: Psalm 98:1-2

Psalm 98:1-2    "O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. (2)  The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen."

"He hath done marvellous things." We do not know who wrote this particular Psalm, but it seems likely that it was a song written by David. Well, David, what kind of marvellous things has God done for you? "His right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory!"  David, can you give us a few examples?  "David said (to King Saul) moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine" (1 Samuel 17:37). David, did the Lord give you victory over that Philistine?  Yes! Goliath fell as the Lord directed that one smooth stone straight to the target.  Was there a song that was sung as a result of the Lord's victory on your behalf? Yes, not only by me, but by many other people. There was great rejoicing as a result of the Lord's victory.

"The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen." (Psalm 98:2)  There is no doubt the Lord openly showed His power and might as the Philistine warrior fell to the ground. But for us today, there was another warrior by whom the Lord "hath gotten him the victory." There was a day some 2000 years ago when Satan thought he had gotten the victory over the Lord. There was a day when Jesus, the Son of God, was nailed to a wooden cross. He gave up the ghost and his earthly body died on that cross. They took His body down from the cross, wrapped it in linen cloths, and laid it in a borrowed tomb. Yes, Satan thought he had won, but we know that three days and three nights later, the victory of the Lord was shown openly when Jesus walked out of that tomb. He's alive!

He's Alive by Don Francisco
"He's alive, He's alive,
He's alive and I'm forgiven,
Heavens gates are open wide."

"He openly showed in the sight of the heathen."  The Centurion had watched many die on wooden crosses. But there's something different about the manner in which the One named Jesus laid down His life. Listen to his words after watching Jesus on the cross: "Truly this was the Son of God." He openly showed His victory through His death, burial, and resurrection. You and I have eternal life. We have victory through our precious Lord!  May our lives openly show the salvation, and our joy, which has been given to us.

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
