Daily Devotion: Psalm 118:22-23

Psalm 118:22-23    "The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.  (23)  This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes."

Have you ever made great plans for your life only to see them fall through?  We all, to some degree, tend to plan our lives out in advance.  The very next verse reminds us that "This is the day that the Lord hath made."  I like to think that I only live for this moment; and in reality, that is what we all do. We only have this moment on this day and we should be rejoicing that the Lord has given it to us.  Yet, we still make plans, and that's okay. We should look forward, but with the realization that there is only one source of stability by which those plans should be founded.

That source of stability is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the stone which was rejected. The Apostle John tells us, "He came unto his own, and his own received him not." (John 1:11) Jesus spoke of the wise man and the foolish. The foolish built his house upon sand while the wise built his house upon the rock.  In a natural sense, we all understand that analogy and know the rock will not wash away as the sand does. We know what the waves of the sea do to a sand castle. But can we take that analogy into our own lives and understand the importance of building our lives upon the true Rock which is Jesus?

Yes, we make plans. We know what we would like to see happen in our lives. But there is only one sure way to see just how marvelous are the works of the Lord. We must build our lives and set our plans according to the will of God.  It's fine to ask God for those things we seek to obtain and the heights of life that we seek to attain, but we should always include in our prayers that great element of which Jesus showed us. He prayed, "Father if thy be willing let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, NOT MY WILL BUT THINE BE DONE." Yes, even Jesus used the example of building His prayer life upon that principle of the rock.

Lord, Help us to not reject the way of success and help us to understand that way is found in, and upon, your Rock, your Head Stone, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
