Daily Devotion: Psalm 119:9, 11, and 15

Psalm 119:9     "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word."

Psalm 119:11   "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

Psalm 119:15   "I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways."

Sometimes it is said that the Bible is outdated. I dare to disagree with that. The Bible is just as pertinent to us today as it was when the ink was still wet on the parchment. God never changes and neither does His Word change.  Today's verses speak to us of the impact of God's Word upon our daily lives. We can be sure that Satan has an alternative to everything that God has given to us. The only difference is that Satan promises turmoil and destruction while God's Word promises peace and instruction in righteousness which brings joy into our lives.  Yet, God's Word even tells us it is possible to "enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season." (Hebrews 11:25)  But notice something that Satan determines to leave out when he lures us into the world of sin.  The Bible tells us there is a pleasure in sin "FOR A SEASON".  The problem surfaces after that season is over when we have to face the consequences of our action which brings a separation in our fellowship with the Lord.

The Psalmist tells us there is an anecdote to the consequences of sin. He tells us there is a way in which we can better guard ourselves against the devices and destruction of Satan. How is that done?  He first mentions that we are to take heed (pay attention) to the Word of God.  If we do not spend time reading the Bible, we cannot pay attention to what it says.  Then he tells us to hide that Word within our hearts. That is we are to be open and mindful as we read the precepts that are put forth in the Word. We hide it in our hearts so that when temptations and struggles of life come upon us, we can draw from the promises God has made to us.

But not only are we to hide it within, we are to meditate upon His Word. Have you ever hidden something so well that you cannot find it when you need it? Why is it that we always find it in the last place we look for it? Could it be that if we looked in the last place in the first place, then we would not have to spend so much time fretting about where we placed it?  Yes, we are to hide the Word of God in our hearts, but then we are to meditate upon it. We are to think about it and constantly remind ourselves where we can find the answer to any and every problem we face.

I say again, it is so very important to spend time in the Word of God each day. It is definitely to our advantage when we seek the Lord and His Word to be applied in our daily walk.

Daily Devotion: Psalm 88:1-4

Psalm 88:1-4  A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. "O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:  (2)  Let my prayer come before thee: incline thine ear unto my cry;  (3)  For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.  (4)  I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that hath no strength" I've said this before and I will say it again (and probably more times before we get to the end of the Psalms) - I love the Psalms because I can surely identify with them. Most Psalms start in a low place and as the writer expresses his thoughts, the Lord begins to lift him up out of that dry place.  Though this entire Psalm is a fervent cry unto the Lord, the Psalmist tells us specifically in three verses that he cried daily unto the Lord. Just a few Psalms ago, we were reminded that God always hears our prayers. ...

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...
