Daily Devotion: Psalm 128:1-2

Psalm 128:1-2     "Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.  (2)  For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee."

I am amazed as I think of how the Word of God builds upon itself. I mentioned last week that since the 119th Psalm, we have been building in degrees upon the blessed truth of God's Word.  Back in the 126th Psalm, we were told to be diligent in sowing seeds in our lives even when it seems like a dream. You can reread that chapter to see how it is worded.  When you sow seed in your garden, there are no immediate results, but with God's blessings there is a harvest.  Be assured of that.  When you sow in faith, trusting the Lord to bless, there will be a harvest. When that harvest comes, there is joy unspeakable. It is at that time you realize, it was not a dream and great happiness comes upon you. At that time, you know everything is okay and the blessings  of God rains down upon you. Yes, there are great showers of blessings.

How does this come about?  "Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways."  When you line up your life to walk in the will of God, His promise is that you will "eat the labour of thine hands." Let me drop way back in our study of the Psalms to see how David spoke it in another place. "Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.  (4)  Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.  (5)  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (Psalm 37:3-5)   The entire 119th Psalm spoke to us of the trustworthiness of God's Word. We may think we have a better way, but His way is that path of righteousness, peace, and joy in our lives.

Let me close with one other passage of Scripture.  "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)  Wait on Him. Trust Him. Commit your way to His ways. Walk in His ways. There is great joy, fulfillment, and contentment when we are faithful to Him.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
