Daily Devotion: Psalm 147:5

Psalm 147:5    "Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite."

We speak often of the power of prayer and our need to talk with God.  A few days ago, I wrote of a very basic truth that we need to hold in our hearts when we approach the throne of grace: God is God.  And even in holding that truth, we really cannot fathom its depth. "Great is our Lord.... His understanding is infinite."  This particular Psalm speaks of many of God's abilities. We will briefly look at the two that are listed prior to this verse.

Our God is able!  That is a statement that is repeated many times throughout the Word of God.   "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3)   He is able to heal the broken hearted.  He is able to do this because He has made us, and not we ourselves. (Psalm 100)  He is able to do this because He understands the frailty of our character. He understands that we are like dust in the wind. (Psalm 103) He is able to do this because His love for us goes beyond anything we could even hope or imagine; yet it is so strong that He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins. We can trust His greatness and His understanding concerning our lives and issues that we deal with.

God is able.  "He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names." (Psalm 147:4)  God told Abraham to go out and count the number of stars when He confirmed His covenant unto him. It is an awesome thing to look up at night and see the stars shining so brightly in the dark sky. Have you ever tried to count them?  It is an impossibility; yet God calls them all by name. He knows every star in the sky because He created and placed them there. That's wonderful, isn't it?  But let's look at something even more wonderful than that. Hear the words of Jesus:  "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?  (7)  But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows." (Luke 12:6-7)  It is wonderful that He calls the stars by name and even greater than He knows you and me by name.

These are brief reminders; yet, we can find great comfort and encouragement if we will take them to heart. When you call upon the Lord, understand that He is greater than anything we could ever imagine. Yes, our God is able and through His mercy and grace, He is willing; therefore "fear not".
