Daily Devotion: Genesis 2:18

Genesis 2:18    "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."

Out of all of God's creation, this is the only thing that He pronounced as being "not good".  "It is not good that the man should be alone."  As you read the next verses, God formed every beast of the field and every fowl and brought them to Adam. Adam was blessed to give names to every one of them. He gave names to all cattle and all fowl of the air and to every beast of the field. "... But for Adam there was not found an help meet for him." There was not a help that was satisfactory for Adam that was found among the animal kingdom.

"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;  (22)  And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man." (Genesis 2:21-22)  The key to that which was satisfactory for Adam is found in the words, "meet for him."  Those words carry the meaning of symmetry.  I wanted to be certain that my thoughts were correct, so one meaning of symmetry is "the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other."

Even though some animals and owners favor each other in looks, there is no symmetry in them. God made the woman to be the symmetrical image of man and thereby giving proper company, support, and love to each other. God, in His wisdom, saw man needed proper company and actually one who would complete him.  It is not good for man to be alone. I thank God for His loving wisdom in providing mutual help and concern and love for a man and woman to complete one another.
