Daily Devotion: Nehemiah 4:7-9

Nehemiah 4:7-9   "But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, (8 ) And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it (9)  Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them."

Good ole Sanballat and Tobiah - you can count on them to be right in the middle of the action. But their being in the middle of the action is not a good thing. They are there trying to disturb and disrupt the work that was petitioned by God. They were angry because the people were dedicated to the wall with a mind to get the work accomplished.

They tried to discourage with their words but that didn't work. So now they are planning an all out attack on the workers.  They apparently failed to realize just how dedicated these people were concerning the work of rebuilding.

The lesson that we see concerning this attack is that we must be constantly on guard against the wiles of Satan. He will try to get into our heads with negative thoughts. If that doesn't work, he will try to discourage those around us. If that doesn't work, he will plan an attack on us in some form or fashion.

We must be ready. Listen to the words of Peter.  "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:" (1 Peter 5:8)  Paul tells us to be strong in the Lord as we are being diligent in guarding against the wiles of Satan.

The path to victory in life comes by following the steps of the Captain of our salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us keep our eyes focused upon Jesus as we seek to do His will.  How did the workers combat against their adversaries? "Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them." Again we see the importance of prayer in our daily lives. Pray without ceasing. The Lord will be your protection and strength.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
