Daily Devotion: Nehemiah 8:14-15

Nehemiah 8:14-15     "And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month: And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written."

Something very important is happening in Jerusalem after Nehemiah has led the people to rebuild the wall.  They understood their need for the Lord while doing the work, and now, they are acknowledging their need for God after it has finished.  They are committing themselves into the hand of God.

They had gone through a time of being in captivity. They are being renewed by the Word of God and are taking it seriously. They were reminded of how God had brought their forefathers out of the captivity of Egypt.  The basis for release was the "blood of the lamb". They had gone forty years without a permanent home before God brought them into the promised land. They had forgotten, but now they are being reminded.

God's mercy had once again released them. Now they are submitting themselves once again by building "booths" in which they would remain for seven days while reflecting upon the goodness of God. Those booths were to be made of Olive branches which represents oil for healing. Pine branches which are  evergreen and  represent eternal life by God's grace.
Myrtle branches represent the manifold blessings of God. And then  Palm branches which represent victory.  All of these branches were held together by "branches of thick trees" which represent strength and power.

We are going through this world as "pilgrims and strangers".  Our wonderful Lord is watching over us with eternal life, healing, many blessings of God each day, and ultimate and absolute victory through Jesus Christ.  All of this is secured by the strength and power of our precious Lord.  Let us reflect daily on His goodness.

Daily Devotion: Colossians 1:25-26

Colossians 1:25-26    “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;  Even   the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:” In verse twenty-four, Paul has expressed his joy in bearing hardship for the church. It is of this church, the body of Jesus Christ, that he is made a minister. Since Paul used the phrase “made a minister” in verse twenty-three of this same chapter, it seems there is something important that he wishes to convey. The Greek word translated as “made” means “to cause to be.” It was the will of God (Col 1:1) that caused Paul to become a minister. God is always the cause of true ministry. Although our fathers may be ministers, if we become true ministers of the gospel it is  not  because our fathers are ministers. True ministers of the gospel do not take that path because they seek honor for themselves, or b...

Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:6-10

Exodus 7:6-10    "And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so did they. And Moses was fourscore years old, and Aaron fourscore and three years old, when they spake unto Pharaoh. And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent. And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent." Moses and Aaron had begun to doubt whether they were right for the job the LORD had given them. Here, it is evident that God granted them a renewal of their faith. Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them. In my opinion, all truly successful outcomes in our lives begin with this. Moses and Aaron were not young men. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three years old. Still,...
