Genesis 3:4-6 "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die (5) For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. (6) And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat."
Remember the serpent (Satan) is more subtil than all the other beast of the
field. He is artful in speaking half truths. "Ye shall not surely
die." That's a part truth. They did not die a physical death that day.
Death is separation. The death experienced by Adam and Eve was a separation in
fellowship with God. We will see they were separated from God and thereby they
were plunged into the state of being dead in trespasses and sin. See Ephesians
2:1.
The half-truth was the lure used by Satan to begin the process of drawing Eve
away from God. As she pondered his statement, Eve "saw that the
tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the
eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise." She looked at
the tree. She thought about the tree. She desired the tree. She ate of the
tree. As a result, Satan was successful in that which he set out to do.
In order to fight the trickery and deceitfulness of Satan, we must seek to set
our affection upon Jesus. We must keep our hearts and minds fixed upon Him. In
doing so, we are fleeing to Him for that mercy and grace to help us fight
Satan's wiley actions.
