Genesis 3:8-10 "And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. (9) And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? (10) And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."
God came walking to them "in the garden in the cool of the day." He
came to them at a time that it seems was His normal part of the day when He
would walk and talk with them. Surely they had sweet fellowship with the Lord
UNTIL... yes, until this day. I wonder if they would usually go running to Him
to hear what He had to say to them. But this day was quite different. Had God
changed? No, in no way did God change nor has He ever changed. What was
different? Oh yes, I remember... they had transgressed (disobeyed) the
commandment of God. They had eaten of that tree which had been forbidden them.
As a result, they hid themselves rather than their usual running to meet God.
"And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art
thou?" Had Adam and Eve sufficiently hidden themselves from God that
He could not find them? No, God knew exactly where they were. His question, as
is every question from God, was to the intent that Adam would stop and realize
where his sin had taken him. His sin had separated him from the sweet
fellowship with God. There was a dread inside Adam instead of him looking
forward to walking with God. "I heard thy voice in the garden, and I
was afraid." What a sad statement! Sin brought fear instead of joy.
Instead of being as gods, Adam and Eve were lonely and fearful.
They heard the voice of God. Isn't that a wonderful thought? Have you heard
that "still small voice" that speaks to your heart and mind? It is
remarkable to know that God seeks fellowship with His people. That fellowship
comes through obedience unto the Lord. Is God asking today, "Where
are you?" Are you walking in love with God or are you fearful of
Him? Listen to that voice. Hear what God is saying to you. Follow Him.
