Daily Devotion: Genesis 4:25-26

Genesis 4:25-26    "And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.  (26)  And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD."

Earlier in this fourth chapter, we find the descendants of Cain are listed. Their individual crafts were mentioned also, such as, some were cattlemen, some worked with brass and iron, and some were musicians. It seems their abilities and desires were to work with their hands. Because Cain had killed his own brother, God had marked him so he would not be constantly hunted by others. Even though this had happened, there is no mention of God or Godly matters when his descendants are listed.

Then we come to Seth, the son given to Adam and Eve. Eve made mention that God "hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew." It is apparent that Adam and Eve taught Seth concerning the things of God. No doubt, they worshipped as a family. God was very important in their daily lives and it reflected in Seth. Seth, in turn, taught his family concerning the importance of God in their lives.  For me, that is the reason we can read in verse 26, "... then began men to call upon the name of the LORD." They applied in their lives that which they were taught. It can be seen there was a relationship with God that is brought forth. No doubt they also had skills as did the descendants of Cain; but, they realized how important it is to include God in those daily activities.

We can conclude from these verses that there is a distinct difference between those who only thought about the natural things of life and those who included God in all their ways. Yes, there is a great difference when we seek the ways of the Lord to be incorporated into our daily walk of life. I had a verse of Scripture come to my heart just this week that I believe teaches the importance of seeking God's will and His ways. I believe this would be a wonderful prayer to incorporate each day into our early mornings. "Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee." (Psalm 143:8)  Seek the Lord concerning the way we should conduct ourselves each day. It does make a difference when we "call upon the name of the LORD."

Daily Devotion: Knowing God By Bearing Fruit

Some will notice the title is not “Bearing fruit because we know God,” so to avoid getting sidetracked with that, we can start with the fact that we won’t bear any godly fruit unless our heart has been changed and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Also, to avoid confusion, I’ll be using the terms “bearing fruit,” “good works” and “service” interchangeably.  I took this article’s title from Part 7, of John Piper’s “Look at the Book” session on Colossians 1:9-12.
