Genesis 6:1-2 "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, (2) That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose."
Let's go back to the beginning once again. "And the rib, which the
LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the
man." (Genesis 2:22) Now let's contrast that with today's verses.
"They took them wives of all which they chose." Can we
immediately see a difference between the language of Genesis 2 and Genesis
6? God brought the woman to Adam and now men are choosing their own
wives. You might ask, "What difference does that make?" I'm
glad you asked. God never changes; therefore we can always go back to the
beginning when we want to see His way of doing things.
What was the basis in today's verses for men taking wives of their own
choosing? Though we are not told, we can look at the consequences and easily
see their standard of choice was not the same as God's. We can look back
to the division that resulted when Cain murdered his brother and there we find
the true meaning of this verse when it speaks of the "sons of God"
and the "daughters of men." The daughters of men were the offspring
of Cain and his descendants. The sons of God were the offspring of Seth. If you
remember, it was the sons of Seth who began "to call upon the name of the
LORD." (Genesis 4:26) I'm certainly not a mathematician, but I do
remember that the result is always a negative when you multiply a
positive with a negative. Sons of God marrying the daughters of men can never
bring about a positive result. God inspired the Apostle Paul to say it in this
manner: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath
light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14)
This passage may not apply to most of my readers, but it is important that we
pass this grand truth to our children and grandchildren. God has a purpose and
plan for each of us whether it is concerning our spouse or everyday decisions.
We must never allow our own desires to override God's design for our lives.
