Daily Devotion: Genesis 17:19

Genesis 17:19    "And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him."

In this 17th chapter, God has reaffirmed His promise to Abraham. Even after God had promised a son through Sarah, Abraham felt Ishmael was to be that promised son. He had apparent doubts when it came to which son would be the continuation of God's covenant. He laughed at the idea that he and Sarah would be able to have a son in their old age. He even suggested that Ishmael could still be that one who would be the promised heir. "O that Ishmael might live before thee!" (Genesis 17:18 )  I feel the need this morning to establish in our hearts that God is faithful even in the midst of our doubts.  I give two New Testament Scriptures just now to affirm this. "Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." (1 Thessalonians 5:24)  And then we read, "If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself." (2 Timothy 2:13)  God's promises are true and faithful in all circumstances.

The next thought that I have this morning concerns God being faithful in all His promises even when it seems impossible to us. You and I are blessed to be able to look back from the end result to the very beginning; but, Abraham was walking by faith when those promises had not yet been brought about. We are told in Hebrews chapter 11:13, " These all died in faith, not having received the promises." Abraham was among that number. Yes, he lived to see Isaac born to Sarah, but the promise of a nation being born from him would come about years after his death.  God's timeline is always perfect and He is always right on schedule according to His timing, not ours.  There is no doubt that Abraham was a great man of faith, but he also had times of doubt and impatience.  I can identify with that. Can you?  But I am reminded once again of Paul's teaching,  "Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." (1 Thessalonians 5:24)  Aren't you thankful that God is faithful and all His promises are faithful and true?  I certainly am.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
