Genesis 21:5-7 "And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. (6) And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. (7) And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age."
It had only been a few years earlier that the Lord appeared to Abram and Sarai
to tell them they would have a son. It was in response to that announcement
that we read these words, "Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well
stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I
have pleasure, my lord being old also?" (Genesis 18:11-12) And now the
promise of a son given by God is fulfilled. Once again we read the words of
Sarah, "God hath made me to laugh." There was a difference in
the two occasions of laughter. The first was a laughter that was the result of
Sarah's doubt. This time she is laughing out of pure joy.
My thoughts this morning come from Genesis 21:1 rather than the verses at the
beginning of this writing. It is there that we read, "And the LORD visited
Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken."
(Genesis 21:1) Both responses by Sarah are pretty much commonplace. There
are times when we are given a thought by the Lord and we find ourselves
doubting that it could possibly take place. Then in the process of time, we
find God fulfilling that which He has told us would happen. This same
type question was asked by Mary when the Angel appeared to her.
"Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not
a man?" (Luke 1:34) The Angel then answered her, "For with God
nothing shall be impossible." (Luke 1:37) Also it was asked by the
disciples on one occasion. "When his disciples heard it, they were
exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? (26) But Jesus
beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all
things are possible." (Matthew 19:25-26) Aren't you thankful that
all things are possible with God and He is absolutely faithful to every promise
He has given?
