Daily Devotion: Galatians 5:14, 16, and 18

Galatians 5:14    "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

Galatians 5:16    "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh."

Galatians 5:18     "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."

There are those people who feel it is too rigid a life to follow Christ. They think it really puts too many restrictions on them if they try to walk the path that God has laid out for us. The truth of the matter is that the only restrictions that are placed are those which would bring pain and misery upon us. Paul began this chapter by saying, "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." Christ has made us free!  Christ has made us FREE !!  So what are the guidelines for walking in this liberty? The key is found in one word - love.  We love God because He first loved us. Because of His love for us, we can love others. If we truly have love in our hearts, we will not want to do those things which God has restricted.

It is a fact that if we walk in the natural tendencies of the flesh that we end up with guilt and regret in our lives. But if we walk in the Spirit of God, we can experience the fullness of joy and contentment. What are those things experienced in our lives when we choose to love others by walking in the Spirit of God?  "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,  (23)  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23)  There is no law against loving, having joy in our hearts and the peace that accompanies. There are no restrictions to being patient, showing goodness, and having faith in our Lord. It isn't against the law to place our dependence upon God. Actually that shows the inner strength that is ours through Christ Jesus. So the question for me this morning is this: Do I want to experience guilt, pain, misery, and remorse? Or, do I want to have that which brings inner peace and joy?  Though I have not always made the right choices, my heart's desire is to have peace with God and live peaceably among others.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
