Daily Devotion: Genesis 6:9-10

Genesis 6:9-10    "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth."

In verse eight of this chapter, we see that Noah found grace (favor) in the eyes of the LORD. Noah did not EARN grace, but he found it. We, who are washed in Jesus’ blood, have also found grace in the eyes of the LORD. And, like Noah, we did nothing to earn it. Jesus died for us while we were still sinners and enemies to God (Romans 5:6-11).

The first thing the scripture tells us about Noah is that he found grace in the eyes of the LORD. Everything that follows is the result (not the cause) of Noah finding favor with God. Noah was blessed with generations (children, family). He had three sons named Shem, Ham, and Japheth. By God’s grace, his family was delivered with him from destruction.

Because Noah found favor with God, he lived a righteous life amid a world that was corrupt and full of violence. Even though the world around us may be corrupt and filled with evil, we can still live a righteous life. The manner of life we live matters because it is a testimony to the grace of God. A righteous life tells of His grace more clearly than our words ever will.

By God’s grace, Noah was a perfect man in his generations. This does not mean that Noah had no faults, but rather that he lived an honest life. While the first word translated as “generations” in verse six points to family, the second usage of the word comes from a different root word. This second word translated as “generations” means an age or the time in which he lived. Noah lived a life of integrity before his family and in his community.

Finally, because Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD, he walked with God. The word translated as “walked” has several applications besides simple physical movement. It implies to "behave, to walk continually, and to follow" among other things. This then begs the question, are we behaving in a godly (righteous) manner in our daily lives? Are we continually looking for His leadership and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit? If these things matter to us, then we have been blessed to find favor with God.
