Proverbs 2:1-5 "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with
thee; (2) So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to
understanding; (3) Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for
understanding; (4) If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid
treasures; (5) Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the
knowledge of God."
The word, if, is mentioned three times in these five verses.
This is a conditional statement that is threefold and is followed by the word,
then. If you do this, then the other will happen. One of the most often
mentioned "if-then" statements is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14,
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." With
statements such as this, we cannot expect the "then" to come before
the "if". I hope I'm not confusing you with my thoughts.
We were told in Proverbs chapter 1:7, "The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of knowledge..." This chapter begins by
telling us that in order to understand the fear of the Lord, we need to spend
time in His Word. "IF we will receive His words and hide them in our
hearts", we can understand the fear of the Lord. IF we incline our ears to
hear that which is true and wise, then we can understand the fear of the
Lord. IF we seek and ask for knowledge and understanding, then we can
understand the fear of the Lord. IF we esteem the Word of God more highly than
silver and gold, then we can understand the fear of the Lord. Why is this
so important? If I can place it in the most simple terms, there are so many
things, situations, and circumstances in life that we just do not understand.
But by learning more about God through His Word, we can find peace through Him.
Let us search through the book of Proverbs with the intention of
"receiving, hiding, listening, and applying" those things we learn. By
doing so, we can find ourselves in a closer walk with the Creator of all this
universe. And that is "the fear (giving honor) of the Lord"
