Daily Devotion: Exodus 4:29-31

Exodus 4:29-31    "And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped."

God appeared unto Moses in the bush that burned but was not consumed. God spoke to Moses and told him all the things that he would do. He listened to all of Moses’ excuses, then told him again all that he would do. Moses finally understood that he was not going to talk God our of His purpose.

God showed compassion for Moses as Moses struggled with learning to trust God and stop thinking about himself. He encouraged Moses by telling him that He would send Moses’ brother, Aaron, to speak for him. However, God told Moses that He would speak to him the things that should be said and done. It was Moses responsibility to relay these things faithfully to Aaron.

Every step of the journey, God showed Moses His faithfulness. God changed things by His involvement. We can see it in simple things, such as the rod that Moses had as he tended the sheep becoming “the rod of God (Exodus 4:20).” Aaron met Moses in the “mount of God” and rejoiced in seeing his brother again.

Now, just as God had spoken, Moses and Aaron found themselves before the elders of the children of Israel. Just as God had promised, Aaron spoke to the people for Moses. Just as God commanded, Moses told Aaron the words to speak, but the words originated with God and not Moses or Aaron. They performed the signs that God had given them.

There is a powerful testimony in verse thirty-one about doing things like God commands: “And the people believed.” When we listen to God’s instruction, speak what He gives us, and do what He tells us when He says to do it, His people will believe. They will know that the LORD has visited them and seen their afflictions. In this, the result will always be the same. We will humble ourselves before the LORD and worship His high and holy name!

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
