Daily Devotion: Exodus 7:1-5

Exodus 7:1-5    "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land. And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt. But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay my hand upon Egypt, and bring forth mine armies, and my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them."

In the conclusion of the previous chapter, Moses again expressed his doubt about being able to do what God had commanded him. Now God is telling Moses to “see.” This usage carried the idea of “discern” or “behold.” God is instructing Moses to stop looking at the situation through his human doubt. Rather, he should remember all that God has already done in bringing him to this point.

God had caused Moses to appear as a god to Pharaoh. Even though Pharaoh contended with Moses, he did not command Moses to be apprehended or refuse to hear Aaron speak. God made it apparent that Aaron was speaking the words that Moses gave him. Therefore, Aaron seemed like a prophet unto Pharaoh. 

God assured Moses that he would speak everything that God commanded him. Aaron would certainly speak those same things to Pharaoh. Pharaoh would hear their request to send the children of Israel out of the land. God also told them that He would harden Pharaoh’s heart. 

Why would God send Moses to do something then seemingly work against him? Because this was not about Moses. God had a purpose in all of this to lay His hand on Egypt with great judgement for their treatment of children of Israel. Not only would the children of Israel know the mighty hand of God, but their enemies would know it as well. The idolatrous land of Egypt would know the I AM is the true LORD.

Beloved, know that God is never working against you, but rather He is working for His glory. In that glory, we will find great deliverance. We need to spend less effort on doubting and more time “seeing” the hand of God in our lives. God is still in the business of delivering us with His great judgements!

Daily Devotion: Knowing God By Bearing Fruit

Some will notice the title is not “Bearing fruit because we know God,” so to avoid getting sidetracked with that, we can start with the fact that we won’t bear any godly fruit unless our heart has been changed and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Also, to avoid confusion, I’ll be using the terms “bearing fruit,” “good works” and “service” interchangeably.  I took this article’s title from Part 7, of John Piper’s “Look at the Book” session on Colossians 1:9-12.
