Isaiah 2:19-22 "And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. (20) In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats; (21) To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. (22) Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?"
"... When he (God) ariseth to shake terribly the earth." We
began Isaiah by God saying, "Come ye, and let us reason together."
I have been told on occasions, "Listen to reason." There are
times in the lives of individuals when "all reason is thrown out the
window" and we do what we think we want to do. When God says, "Let us
reason", He is not saying that He will compromise if we put up a good
argument. In fact, He will shake us "terribly" if we persist in going
our own way. We have been given warning after warning concerning the
difference in God's will and our's. "Cease ye from man, whose breath
is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?" Man's
time on this earth is terminal and his wisdom and understanding is
limited. We are to place our trust in the Eternal and Almighty God in
heaven. If I may end this with a quote from Daniel. The Chaldeans admitted to
King Nebuchadnezzar, "There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the
king's matter." But Daniel had the correct answer to the king, "But
there is a God in heaven." We are admonished in our text today that
we are to place our complete trust and confidence in the Lord. May we begin
just now in leaning heavily upon our Lord.
