Daily Devotion: Isaiah 9:6 (7)

Isaiah 9:6    "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Today, we finish our thoughts on this verse. This is a passage that has been dear to me from my days in elementary school. I remember our class having a program for the PTO (as it was named back then). We sang Christmas songs, but the part I remember the most is that we memorized this verse of Scripture and presented it as part of that program. I have loved this verse since that time. Even though I really did not understand it back then, I knew it was something very special.

Each name given to our Lord builds upon the truth of the previous name. We first understand there is something Wonderful about Jesus. I knew that back then, but it had not become a personal message to me at that moment of time. Through the years, I have come to know Him as my Counsellor. In my heart, I have heard Him speak words to me that were needed at that moment. He gives me words of encouragement as well as words of correction. He has done things in my life that made me know that He is the mighty God. His power is infinite. Yes, He spoke this universe into existence, but the power of His words have formed me through the years.  Those words became even more precious to me as I came to realize the relationship that was given to me by my everlasting Father. The little song, "Jesus Loves Me," takes on greater meaning each day and as I hold that in my heart, I know Him as my Prince of Peace.

Sometimes peace is defined as the absence of turmoil, or freedom from disturbance; tranquility. That describes peace, but for me, the definition of peace is the presence of Jesus Christ.  I am in full agreement with the words of the Apostle Paul concerning this subject. " But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace..." (Ephesians 2:13-14) May the truth of these names remain within us all the days of our lives.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
