Daily Devotion: Isaiah 9:7

Isaiah 9:7    "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."

It is true that peace comes from power. I think, as a child of God, that we must come to terms with whose power is under consideration. Often, we hear that our faith must be strong in order to have peace in our lives. There is some truth to that, but for me, the power that brings peace in my life is the power we have talked about the past several days concerning our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ.  As we come to terms (by that, I mean as we receive it as the absolute truth) concerning Jesus, we can find peace in every circumstance.  When we see that He is truly Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace, we find rest in Him, not ourselves. True faith is in the strength of Christ, not in our ability. Can we receive that as true in our total livelihood?

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."  (John 1:12-13) When we can receive this great truth concerning our Lord, we grow in power in our walk. We can grow closer to Him and experience the depth of peace. We come to the place where we are content to trust His wisdom and power in guiding us through this path called life. As our confidence grows, then the pattern of living that has been shown to us becomes our own pattern for life.  His power has no end. His wisdom has no end. There is nothing outside the realm of His ability. Can we trust Him to direct (govern) our thoughts, words, and actions? Yes, we most definitely can. Are we willing to place those things in His hands each day? That must be answered by each one of us. But if we do that, we will receive power to "become (live as) the sons of God."

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
