Isaiah 11:10 "And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious."
Thus far, we have seen the phrase, "in that day," many times. I think
it is very important to understand when and what "that day" is
talking about. In chapter 2, we saw that "in that day" the church
would be established. "In that day", a virgin shall bring forth a son
and His name shall be called Immanuel. "In that day," a child would
be born and a son would be given. We will see that phrase through the
rest of the book, but for now we see "that day" is a glorious one.
"The root of Jesse.... shall stand for an ensign of the people."
What, or Who, is the root of Jesse? As we look back on those verses, we know
this is speaking of Jesus, the Son of God. Can we agree that we have been
"in that day" since the birth of Jesus, our Saviour? He stands
triumphant at this very moment. He won the victory when He arose from the
grave and ascended back to the Father. We read in Jesus' intercessory prayer,
"And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory
which I had with thee before the world was." (John 17:5) His
glory has been restored unto Him. And here's the beautiful part for us,
"... thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus
Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:57)
We are to hold high the banner of love that has been given to us. We have been
given a glorious rest that is promised us through our Lord Jesus, the
"root of Jesse." Yesterday, we say He is the stem, from which we
enjoy the fruit of His labor. Why is the word, root, used today to describe
Jesus? We know that the most important part of any plant is the root system. It
is through the roots that nourishment is given to the plant. Jesus said
that we are the branches that grow from Him. He is the vine or the main root
system. All spiritual nourishment comes to us through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
We are to use that nourishment in service unto Him with His banner (His
glorious name) lifted high. All of our service is to be done to the glory and
honour of our Lord. When I am experiencing unrest in my soul, I find that
I have wandered away from Him . But when I walk with Him in simple obedience,
there is a sweet rest unto my soul. Lord, I want that rest each day.
