Daily Devotion: Isaiah 28:5-6

Isaiah 28:5-6     "In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,  (6)  And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate."

One of the biggest mistakes in life is the thought that we can handle our own battles. One of the first phrases a child learns is this, "I can do it myself."  It's a sad commentary that we sometimes do not outgrow that mentality. I can handle this without any help. One thing I often hear is, "This is just a little thing. It's too small to bother the Lord with this."  It is my opinion that there is nothing too big, nor too small, for the Lord to handle. We aren't "bothering" Him when we take our struggles to the Lord. I remember the father of my best friend as he struggled to free a bolt on a lawnmower.  He had no idea that I was close enough to hear him, but as he battled that rusty bolt, I heard him say, "Lord, I need your help with this one." Yes, God is concerned in all our struggles and yes, the bolt came loose with the Lord's help.

"In that day (the day of struggle) shall the LORD of hosts be...."  That stands on its own. He is the Great I AM in all situations and circumstances. There is a list of things that follows that initial statement, but we must come to the understanding and conclusion that above all else, "The LORD is..."  He is the same and never loses or gains power or wisdom. So, "in that day the LORD shall be for a crown of glory." He is the One Who grants us to be the victor in our struggles. "In that day the LORD shall be "a diadem of beauty." He is the One Who gives us the victory march after the battle is won. The meaning of the word indicates a prancing of victory. Although we do not want to be involved in a prideful dance, we do not have to hang our heads in defeat. "In that day the LORD shall be the "spirit of judgment and strength" that turns the battle. He will be the One Who receives the glory and honor for all our victories. Let us not be hesitant to look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. He will grant mercy and grace to help in time of need.

Daily Devotion: Enter With Thanksgiving - Psalm 100:1-5

One of the most beautiful Psalms of Thanksgiving is the 100th Psalm. Please turn to it and read verses one through five. With all my heart I believe we are a people and a nation that has truly been blessed by God. Of all those who “give thanks to Him and praise His name” we should be at the top!  It is not uncommon to compile wish lists at Christmas, and draw up a list of resolutions for the new year. But there is another list we often overlook - a Thanksgiving Day list of all for which we are thankful. What would your list contain? Most likely, a good part would be material possessions. I’m convinced that we would find that we have much more for which to be thankful than just our material possessions.  Like you, I’m sure my list would include the major things - life, health, family, friends, and the nation we live in, despite all its flaws. But even more than that, I’m thankful for my salvation, my Church family, and the mercy that God showers upon us each d...

Daily Devotion: An Important Question

In one of the great Psalms of thanksgiving, the writer asked a most pertinent question. “What shall I render unto the Lord for all of His benefits toward me” (Psalm 116:12) ? We may observe two elements in this question. The psalmist acknowledges having received many benefits, or blessings, at the hand of the Lord. For the believer, to be the receiver of blessings from the Lord is a fact beyond question. That is one facet of a proper perception of reality. However, for the unbeliever, or even for the nominal believer, such things come in the course of nature, or as a matter of deserving them. But to fail to see that such benefits and blessings come from the Lord is to lose touch with reality. The other element of the question is that the writer expresses a sense of obligation to the Lord and reveals a desire to do something in response to the amazing goodness of God to him. It is the reflex of the godly heart to desire to do something in response to the perceived go...
